Therapy for Alcohol and Drug Use
Addiction is a complex disease that affects both brain function and behaviors. I work with clients to help them recognize, avoid, and cope with situations in which they are most likely to use alcohol and/or other drugs. We focus on the thoughts and emotions that impact these decisions. I help clients explore ambivalence about changing addictive behaviors and discern personal motivation for making changes.
There are many reasons that drive what we do. When it comes to addiction, there is something that compels you to “use” even though a part of you doesn’t want to. Over time, this compulsion starts to dominate and gets in the way of the life you want to live, while impacting relationships, work/school, and your quality of life.
Like other chronic diseases, addiction is best treated by professional care, mutual support and self-management. In our counseling sessions, you will learn and understand how a mind struggling with addiction works, practical recovery skills and long-term strategies to rewire your thinking patterns. Together, we will create a relapse prevention plan. I offer on-site drug testing for those who wish it and for those who require it for their school or employer.
Addiction therapy is not just for the individual with the disorder. The effect of addiction is felt by everyone in the client’s life, including family, friends, spouse. Therapy can help all those affected by the vicious cycle of addiction.
